Lefkara Village is one of Cyprus’ most charming and picturesque traditional villages, located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, about 40 km southwest of Larnaca. It’s best known for its intricate lacework, known as “Lefkaritika,” and its skilled silverwork, making it a popular destination for both culture enthusiasts and those looking for authentic Cypriot crafts. Heritage: Lefkara lace is world-renowned and was even inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2009. This craft dates back to the Venetian period in Cyprus (15th-16th centuries), with techniques passed down through generations. The lace is known for its geometric patterns, delicate handwork, and symmetrical designs.

  • Leonardo da Vinci Connection: According to local legend, Leonardo da Vinci visited Lefkara in 1481 and purchased a lace tablecloth for the altar of the Milan Cathedral.
  • Shops and Workshops: The village is filled with workshops where you can watch local women making lace, and buy authentic pieces. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with shops selling lace, which can range from tablecloths and runners to smaller decorative items.
  • Lefkara is filled with beautiful, traditional stone houses featuring terracotta-tiled roofs and wooden balconies. Many of the buildings have been restored, maintaining their historical charm. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow streets and colorful facades.
